Mussorgski est une one-man-band polonaise fondée en 1990 par Khorzon. Cette band tire son nom du célèbre compositeur romantique russe Modest Mussorgski (1839-1881). Khorzon est aussi le membre fondateur de la one-man-band (jusqu’en 2015 puis il y a eu l’ajout d’autres membres) polonaise Arkona. Si pour Arkona on peut dire qu’elle fait du black metal, les choses se compliquent pour Mussorgski. Mussorgski a publié son premier album In Harmony with the Universe en 1995, le deuxième Chaos and Paranormal Divinity en 2012 et son dernier Creatio Cosmicam Bestiae en 2016. Il va de soi que les hiatus entre un album et l’autre sont dû à l’activité de Khorzon avec Arkona. pour cet album Creatio Cosmicam Bestiae, Khorzon s'est entouré de Ronve, vocals (tracks 1-2, 4-5, 8) et de Odo, guest vocals track 7.

Sur metal-archives.com on trouve que Mussorgski fait du Black/Industrial Metal/Ambient. Pourquoi pas ? Il y a de l’industrial mais c’est surtout au niveau du son, de la production. Ambient certes pour les atmosphères crées et pour une certaine circularité des riffs voire une certaine linéarité. Black Metal aussi pour l’attitude, le côté sombre, la voix, le malaise proposé et avancé. Mais tout ceci oubli les orchestrations de l’album. Par exemple sur un titre comme Key To The Universe on retrouve tout ce que je viens de dire et les orchestrations donnent de la profondeur au titre, du relief et une atmosphère planante. Mussorgski déclame la solitude sidérale comme dans les premiers vers de Key To The Universe.

On peut trouver un peu plus d’espoir dans le titre God Is In The Neurons où l’on voit une certaine forme d’immortalité, même si le fond sonore n’est pas de plus rassurant :

Si on écoute bien l’album on pourrait peut-être rapprocher Mussorgski à Arcturus pour son côté ‘spatial’, avant-gardiste, novateur. Mais là où Arcturus fait les choses avec aisance et désinvolture Mussorgski est plus compliqué. Mussorgski est instable, imprévisible, toujours à la recherche d’un équilibre qui reste toujours instable et mouvant. Titre après titre et c’est ceci sont charme d’un côté et sa difficulté d’accès de l’autre. C’est un diamant brut.

Tout l’album nous a plu surtout grâce aux inserts de musique classique disséminée tout le long de l’opus. C’est très bien et jamais banal. On voudrait juste souligner le titre Paradisum qui est vraiment magnifique. Il commence de façon sombre, un tempo doom, avec une certaine mélancolie et un côté épique qui se dégagent. La voix se fait déclarative à un moment et il s'en suivent des cris désespérés. Suite à la déclaration « Paradise around - our katharsis » le côté classique apparaît par touches. En effet il y a un aspect rituel qui se manifeste à l’écoute de ce titre et finalement a posteriori sur tout l’album.

Il faudrait peut-être commencer l’écoute de Creatio Cosmicam Bestiae par sa fin Paradisum et puis aller à rebours.

Pour terminer Mussorgski avec Creatio Cosmicam Bestiae a sorti un très bon album de metal extrême. Un album complexe, travaillé, et qui vraiment nécessite plusieurs écoutes et du temps pour l’apprivoiser. Certes, ce n’est pas facile et il  faut de la volonté mais ensuite si on est persévérant la récompense est là. Il est où le bonheur, il est où ? Il est là le bonheur, il est là.

The material here was writing during and right after the "Satan macht frei" (2004) album, and as such perfectly fits in the evolution of Blackdeath towards apocalypse. Upon first hearing, you will find the material has the primitive aggression like "Bottomless armageddon" and the previous albums, but upon closer listening you'll find the riffs and song writing are slowly morphing into their later sound as heard on "Vortex" and "Katharsis" albums.

As with all Blackdeath material, "Totentanz" is in a way sounding strangely removed from a natural, organic sound. Created in solitary Russia, Blackdeath's own apocalyptic black metal sounds like nothing you have heard before. These songs are the last Blackdeath songs to feature a drum computer and combined with the atypical melodies and sound with hysterical and possessed vocals give the whole an unhuman and unrelenting aura that is simply uncanny and truly evil. Their unique style is present on all of their recordings, and the fact they stayed true to their style is the main reason Blackdeath is the only Russian black metal with a highly respected status not only in Russia but especially far outside.

Originally, part one ("Totentanz") was a split CD/LP with Mortifera - as a kind of continuation of the first split between Celestia and Black Draugwath, and has been unavailable for years.

The second part ("Totentanz II") was a split CD/LP with Leviathan (USA), who invited Blackdeath. For a lot of Blackdeath devotees, this was the introduction to the band and remains a favourite to many. This split has been out of print and only available through the bootleg and pirate pressing circuit.

This release features both "Totentanz" parts remastered to sit together better, and with slightly changed song order.

Comes as six-panel digipack with a booklet. Lyrics and the history behind the release are included in the 8 page booklet.

After the previous full tour with Inquisition and Archgoat in 2015, Blackdeath will tour North/East Europa again in january and february 2016.
