A Flourishing Scourge sort son nouvel album Sickened Seed

 

L’album du groupe est en préparation depuis des années. Inspirés par leur amour pour les albums concept, ils se sont lancés dans l’aventure pour créer les leurs. Musicalement, ils ont créé un paysage sonore pour compléter le concept, tandis qu'au niveau des paroles, ils ont tissé un thème global détaillé, laissant l'interprétation ouverte aux auditeurs. L'album défie les genres spécifiques, embrasse l'expérimentation et aboutit à une aventure créative satisfaisante pour le groupe.

A Flourishing Scourge a été formé en 2013 par des amis de longue date Tye Jones et Josh Keifer comme exutoire créatif pour leurs intérêts musicaux communs. Créé à l'origine comme un projet de studio, il a rapidement suscité un intérêt et une popularité dans la région de Seattle. En 2015, Andrew Dennis et Kevin Carbrey avaient complété le line-up et le groupe a auto-publié son premier EP, As Beauty Fades Away. Fin 2017, ils s'étaient solidement établis sur la scène metal du nord-ouest et ont sorti leur premier album éponyme.

Après plusieurs années de concerts dans la région de Seattle et sur toute la côte ouest, le groupe a décidé de se concentrer sur un album de suivi qui mettrait véritablement en valeur leurs capacités d'écriture et musicales. Le point culminant de cet effort a abouti à leur troisième sortie en studio, Sickened Seed. Mixé et masterisé aux Fascination Street Studios, c'est l'œuvre la plus ambitieuse du groupe à ce jour.

Dreamgrave's Monuments is now available in Digipak format with 2 exclusive bonus tracks

Hungarian progressive rock/metal Dreamgrave released successor to critically acclaimed 2014's Presentiment with title Monuments, which is now available in a limited edition digipak with two exclusive live bonus tracks! You can listen, download the new album, or get a physical digipak edition on the band's Bandcamp page.
As with their debut, the entire production is done by Gábor Vári in Miracle Sound Studios. Further parts of the series (The Mad and The Imperious) will follow each other within every 9-10 months. Digital artist Tobias Art took care of the illustration for both the cover and the digipak, just like he did for 'Presentiment' a couple of years ago.

Monuments, an EP series

"Monuments is a hugely ambitious effort. This can be seen in everything from varied song structures all the way to the vibrant cover art.  All songs show character, maturity, and strong writing skills from this group" - The PROG Mind

Similarly to their debut, Monuments is also built around a concept.

"You’re being uploaded, transformed and processed: about the tendency of vaporizing uniformization of the individual, displayed by an EP series of the path that ultimately leads to chosen compulsion to conform."

Next to the title track which introduces the main concept the listener finds two, softer melodies: Drop The Curtain is a song for people, who have hard time fighting dementia, and also for those, who are dedicating their lives taking care after their loved ones for the very last moments.

Passing Faith in Others is a love song, but not in its traditional sense. Most people are eager to build an enviable reputation. Do anything beyond their capacities to own classy gadgets and surrond themselves with flawless people. In the other way around they also tend to trash everything that isn't perfect for them anymore, or break sometimes, and don't even bother to fix or work on them. And that's particularly true when it comes to relationships. Or even worse: they choose to live in a comfortable lie...

DREAMGRAVE is a dark progressive band from Szeged, Hungary that initially formed in 2007, and after numerous line-up changes, finally came to fruition in September of 2012. The band first released a demo in 2009, but with their new line-up, they released their first full length album entitled ''Presentiment'' in October, 2014. Their sound marries traditional progressive metal with symphonic, gothic and strong influences from extreme metal. Featuring female soprano vocals alongside both clean male singing and death metal growls, the music bears influences from acts ranging from OPETH and PARADISE LOST to HAKEN.

Dreamgrave is about dancing on a blade’s edge. Every human being is driven by high hopes and ambitions: the longer one fights for those dreams, for self-definition, pursuing pure happiness, the more fragile they become, their dreams get vulnerable, and at the end even passionate ones able to give up.

Qaanaaq est un groupe italien de metal actif depuis 2012. L’album Escape from the Black Iced Forest a été enregistré en 2015 au Michelangelo Recording Studio et est sorti le 06 octobre 2016 via le label Another Side Records. Le groupe est formé par Mattia Togni (Bass), Nicola Togni (Drums), Dario Leidi (Guitars), Luca Togni (Keyboards), Enrico Perico (Vocals).

Qaanaaq tire son nom de la ville de Qaanaaq qui se trouve au nord-ouest du Groenland. La ville de Qaanaaq a été appelée dans le cours de l’histoire Thule ou encore New Thule. Thule ou Thulé dans le cours de l’histoire, à partir des anciens grecs, était à la fois un lieu réel qui coïncide avec le nord extrême et à la fois ce nom indiquait le bout du monde, l’idée d’une limite que l’on ne pouvait pas franchir. Cette idée d’absolu colle bien à la musique de Qaanaaq qui propose un metal original où plusieurs styles se croisent : du dark, du prog, du doom, du death / black, de l’avant-garde.

Escape from the Black Iced Forest se compose de 5 titres pour une durée d’environ 45 minutes. Autant dire que les compositions sont longues et articulées. Body Walks est un très bon titre qui s’ouvre de façon doom pour enchaîner sur un tempo différent où le clavier rajoute des touches. Le chant et entraînant et sans fioritures. Il s’en suit un changement d’atmosphère aéré et très mélancolique d’une rare beauté. Et encore un changement de temps plus rapide avec un autre changement d’atmosphère où le chant se veut plus agressif avant de reprendre la structure du début avec quelques petites variations.

Eskimo's Wine Is a Dish Best Served Frozen s’ouvre avec un clavier planant et avec un chant agressif. Ce titre est inspiré par le roman American Gods de Neil Gaiman. Comme sur le titre précédent on peut constater le travail vocal d’Enrico Perico qui alterne plusieurs registres. Untimely at Funerals est encore un titre qui alterne les atmosphères plus directes et plus aérée et on peut trouver sur ces ouvertures des échos de Pink Floyd. Ce titre est vraiment bon et il a été choisi pour figurer sur la compilation Recopilatorio - Octubre 2016 soignée par le NECROMANCE DIGITAL MAGAZINE. 

Qaanaaq s’attaque ensuite à la cover du titre High Hopes de Pink Floyd qui apparaissait sur l’album The Divion Bell (1994). Cette cover est plus rapide et sombre que l’original et si l’original était un très bon titre, cette cover est vraiment excellente.

Red Said It Was Green est un titre qui clame son amour au Groenland en s’appuyant sur un fait historique. Eric the Red est le viking qui a découvert  le Groenland et l’a appelé ainsi « Terre Verte » d’où « green land » ce qui a donné Groenland. D’où le titre (Erik the) Red Said It Was Green. Cet amour pour le Groenland prône à ne pas prendre pour argent comptant tout ce que l’on nous dit puisque en réalité la « terre verte » est gelée, solitaire, dure, arctique. C’est le titre où les passages extrêmes sont le plus présents, le titre le plus direct aussi, même si les changements d’atmosphères et de temps sont toujours présents.

Qaanaaq avec Escape from the Black Iced Forest nous propose un premier album fort réussi. On peut trouver un certain écho avec des groupes comme Ghost, Tiamat, Pink Floyd, Misanthrope. Ce qui est sûr c’est que Qaanaaq a une forte personnalité et arrive à proposer un album intéressant, abouti, soigné où les ambiances varient avec des enchaînements maîtrisés. Il faut aussi souligner l’excellent artwork (qui a été cité par le site BDP Metal comme Best Doom MetalCover in October 2016) et aussi l’excellent layout. Self-released

Defying est un groupe polonais originaire de Olsztyn, actif depuis 2008 qui évolue dans un registre post-metal et prog-metal. En même temps le groupe utilise des instruments plus atypiques comme le violon, la trompette et le saxophone. Le groupe naît avec le duo Rafał Warniełło and Tomasz Semeniuk et ensuite avec le bassiste Paweł Siemaszko et le guitariste Dominik Pliszko, il compose la démo Phial of Prayers. Ensuite le chanteur Marcin Bielski intègre le groupe, le guitariste Dominik part et sera remplacé par Piotr Stępiński. Le groupe sort en 2012 sa démo Portraits. En 2013 Marcin quitte le groupe et Piotr en devient le chanteur et le groupe commence à utiliser des voix grunt. Le premier album du groupe sort en 2014 et se nomme Nexus Artificial.

Aujourd’hui Defying sort son deuxième album, un EP à être précis, qui se nomme The Splinter of Light We Misread et qui présente plusieurs invites : Natalia Szałaj – vocals in “The Sunlight Recedes” / Marcin Bielski – vocals in “The Sunlight Recedes” / Marcin Drabik – violin in “Irreversible” / Piotr Ziarek Ziarkiewicz – trumpet in “Irreversible” / Rafał Wawszkiewicz – saxophone in “Till Shadow Is White”.

The Splinter of Light We Misread réunit 4 titres de post-metal mais on a envie de dire de post-black metal. L’attitude est l’expérimentation évidement mais en même temps il y a un côté intransigeant et jusqu'au-boutiste dans l’attitude qui découle d’une approche black metal. Que ce soit dans le son de vibrato récurrent, la voix extrême ou le fait de développer un côté DIY pour l’album qui est auto-produit.

The Splinter of Light We Misread se présente comme une marée mouvante et il reflète ce côté changeant, ce rythme de va et viens de l’eau poussée par le vent. De même, les moments plus extrêmes que ce soit le tempo, la hargne de riff costaux, d’une voix grunt en opposition / alternance à des moments plus calmes et solaires soulignés par la voix claire masculine, la voix claire féminine de Natalia Szałaj, le violon, la trompette et le saxophone. En effet si le côté mélancolique du black metal est souligné par un riffing qui touche deux chordes à la fois et en tonalité mineur, l’ajout de cuivres se greffe à cette mélancolie en la multipliant.

The Splinter of Light We Misread avec ses trente minutes au compteur se révèle comme un album abouti, travaillé, fouillé qui grandit écoute après écoute et qui montre le bon état de Defying. L’album se clôt avec la cover « New Dawn Fades » de Joy Division, une chanson de 1979  et tirée de l’album Unknown Pleasures.
